The Wedge  The Wedge

Happy New Year to all. Hope you had a wonderful and safe holiday season.
We ended the year with a beautiful and delicious Christmas celebration at the Empress Pavilion Restaurant and recognized the accomplishments of many Club members and our guests. A special thank you to Jean and Steve Lee for their efforts in making the Party a great success which included selecting and wrapping the many door prizes and choosing the unique and highly prized figurine centerpieces. Appreciation was given to several others who helped Jean and Steve; Bill and Helen Tom, Dore Wong, Eddie and Elza Lee, and Santa Claus who had a surprising resemblance to John Wong.
Victor Wong introduced and thanked the 2000 Board of Directors and Officers and recognized LA Royal Vista pros for their generosity including Don Crocker, head pro, who provided door prizes of golf bags, drivers and clubs. Doug Ruff was also recognized for his continued assistance in the Las Vegas skins game, which totaled almost $5,000. Additional thank you's were given to Kellogg Chan for his continued donation of door prizes and Richard Ong of Hayward for the Olimar club.
Victor recapped various events and tournaments for last year including the Tucson tournament with 43 LACGC participants, the Vancouver tournament with 12 of our members attending and many other away tournaments. Thanks and appreciation were offered to Allen Mar for the fantastic Las Vegas tournament. It's a tremendous amount of work, and Allen's seamless coordination makes it a fun-filled, enjoyable event. Thanks, again, Allen!
As a point of interest, Victor, who also serves as Vice President to the Federation, noted that there are 22 clubs involved in the Federation with a 1,700 membership.
Kellogg Chan, continuing Board Chairman, introduced the new 2001 slate of Directors and Officers:
Board of Directors-Herb Leong, Dave Thom, Ed Wong, Jean Lee, Tony Chau, Bing Wong and Bill Tom, Director Emeritus. Officers-Victor Wong, President, Dore Wong, Vice President, M.K. Chuck, Treasurer, Dave Davis, Tournament Chairman, Joe Loy, Handicap Chairman, and Lu Thom, Secretary/Wedge.
Kudos were given to Tony Chau and Greg Chau for their hard work in developing the Club's website. Since Greg took the lead and continues to refine and update the website, he was given a dozen Tiger Wood golf balls. The website is a great way to stay informed about schedules, handicaps, tournament results, roster updates and tee times. If you have an e-mail address, be sure and give it to Greg or Tony so you can receive the Wedge and other information via e-mail. Your address will remain confidential and not listed on any Club literature.
Congratulations to the many winners for the year 2000 that were recognized at the Christmas Party. Aggregate champs Tony Chau/Greg Chau and Kellogg Chan/Steve Lee; match play champs Kent Chen/Koji Kodama, Sid Louie/Bob Wong, Peter Joe/Joy Loy and Club Champions Steve Chuey for low net for two days of play, and Allen Mar for low gross for two days of play. The women's overall low net trophy was presented by Jean Lee, last year's winner to yours truly, Lu Thom; and Bing Wong, deciding that he didn't want to bring back the trophy he won last year, won overall low net for the second year in a row. Dore Wong presented Dave Davis, last year's winner of the special Dave Wong Memorial trophy that recognizes the most improved handicap, with a remembrance clock. The third place winner was Winston Young, runner up was Kellogg Chan, and the most improved handicap for the year was Dave Thom. (In looking at Dave's recent scores, he is apparently working on increasing his handicap so he can improve it and be in the hunt for the trophy again this year!)
We will be celebrating Chinese New Year's on February 4 and will hold a General Meeting after golf. Remember to bring an exchange gift. Also, we are continuing to encourage members to sponsor good candidates for Club membership. On February 4, we will hold a member/guest scramble tournament. Bring a guest to play a round with the Club and you and your guest will be treated to lunch. Be sure and bring an extra gift for your guest for the gift exchange.
The Board is considering increasing the Club's contribution to monthly tournaments. The amount will be determined at a later date. (Sooner rather than later!) As Tournament Chairman, Dave Davis is considering offering optional skin games during the monthly tournaments so be sure and get those dates on your calendars.
The annual Benson Fong tournament will be held March 30-April 1 in Laughlin. As you will see from the attached entry form, we will be playing Mojave Resort and Desert Lakes golf courses with accommodations at the Colorado Belle Hotel. Please note the February 17 entry deadline. Transportation is still being discussed. At present, attendees will be traveling on their own; however, if anyone can provide assistance in securing a bus and/or parking arrangements, please contact any Board member or Officer.
Los Angeles will host this year's Memorial Day Tournament led by the able team of Dave Davis and Steve Chuey as co-chairs. For future reference, the Seniors tournament to be held in Reno, July 8-10, will include golfers who are 55 years young.
Speaking of tournaments, Natalie Wong had a terrific season including two wins and earned a check at every tournament but one (is that Bing I see smiling!?!) From this January 12 to February 12, Natalie will be playing on the Kosaido Ladies Asia Golf Circuit. She will travel to 4 countries to play in 4 tournaments, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. When she returns, she will play primarily on the Futures Tour where the fields are 3-4 times larger than those played last year and also graduates its top three players to the LPGA Tour.
Attached are the December monthly tournament results. Great job A-Flight winners Manny Chang, Winston Young , Dave Davis, Jack Jung, Frank Louie and Bing Wong, B Flight Koji Kodama, Eric Joe and Laurie Saemann, and C Flight winners Franklin Low, Calvin Miao, Steve Lee, and Lu Thom.
Much belated congratulations to Dore Wong on her retirement after 44 years with the School District and again to Dore and to Winnie and Calvin Lee as grandparents of beautiful baby girls.
Wishing everyone a healthy, happy, golf-filled New Year. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please send any items for the Wedge to Lu Thom.
